Common questions

Can you read my messages?

No. Messages and attachments are end-to-end encrypted on your device before they reach us, and our server stores only ciphertext. We can see metadata — that an account sent something to another account at a certain time — because that is what makes delivery possible at all, but not what was said.

Why do I need an email address if there is no phone number?

It is how you verify your account at sign-up and how you get back in if you forget your password. It is never shown to other users. If you verify a business email, only the domain is displayed as a badge, never the address itself.

Someone messaged me who I do not know.

They cannot reach you until you allow it. Messages from an account you have not spoken to arrive as a request, which you can accept, ignore or block without them being told which.

What happens to my messages if I delete my account?

Messages you sent are redacted on our server so they stop being served, and your handle is retired permanently. Copies already delivered to other people's devices stay there — no messenger can reach into someone else's phone, and any that claims otherwise is not end-to-end encrypted.

What happens to my messages if I lose my phone?

If you set up recovery, sign in on your new phone and enter your recovery key — your message history comes back. The recovery key is created on your phone and only you have it, which is exactly why we cannot reset it. Without recovery, messages exist only on the devices that received them. Knock also keeps its data out of Android and iCloud device backups, so your keys are never copied anywhere you did not choose.

Does crash reporting send my messages?

No, and it is off entirely unless you switch it on in Settings. When enabled it sends stack traces and your device model, never message content.
